Nature Reconstruction Vloedgraaf River, Susteren (the Netherlands)

The purpose of this project was to restore the natural flow of the Vloedgraaf river near Susteren, the Netherlands. This river was, like many others in the region, canalised in the middle of last century in an effort to streamline water management. This canalisation reduced, however, the environmental value of the river and in some cases increased the flood risk.

This was my first project as a graudate engineer and I was responsible to manage all site works.

Old situation

The works consisted of major soil excavation and a total realignment of the river, creating meanders and pools. Existing concrete slope protetction and polluted soils were removed.
